Every weight loss journey has a beginning and mine begins at 171.8 pounds. Yikes. How did I get here? As a teenager, I never could gain weight. I would eat anything and everything I wanted and never gain a pound. My friends hated it and would tell me that it would catch up to me one day. Boy were they right!
With a starting weight set, I have a goal in mind. 30 pounds gone. I believe 141 is a realistic weight for me and I can achieve it.
Exercise and meal planning are going to be my methods. I will also be tracking both using myfitnesspal.com. I love this app because it has so many restaurant foods already in it and it is really easy to import recipes from online sources. I use it on my phone and on the web so there is no excuse not to log my food.
If you are new to this, I recommend just logging your food for a few weeks and see how much you are eating. You may be surprised at how many calories you are eating! I sure was.
One week later… and I’m off to a good start.

So, my last post was in response to the Boston Marathon bombing. Wow. I really am not much of a runner but I did relate to what happened that day.
In the time since then, I managed to injure my knees while riding a SeaDoo (long story), go through 3 months of physical therapy for that and start working with a trainer. I feel stronger than ever but weigh more than I ever have.
What to do?
Some swear by low fat diets. But then I heard there are new studies that say fat doesn’t make you fat. It’s sugar.
So I should choose sweeteners like Splenda? Oh no, not that. It causes headaches and will actually stimulate your appetite and weight gain! Okay then.
How about a Paleo diet? Well, US News ranked it last in all the diets based on being effective at weight loss, safe, reasonably easy to follow, nutritious, and protective against diabetes and heart disease. So, no.
Low carb diets have just as bad a reputation as Paleo. I’ve done Weight Watchers, don’t want to try Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem because I fear the processed foods.
What to do?
Honestly? I have no idea. But I am working out consistently and limiting my calorie intake to a normal level while eating fresh vegetables and fruits along with lean meats.
I am a really bad runner, but a runner, nonetheless. I can barely finish a 5K in under 40 minutes so the idea of running a marathon is a fantasy for me.
When I first heard about today’s bombing at the Boston Marathon, I was shocked, then frightened for people I knew from Memphis who were running. I quickly checked my Twitter feed for information and sent private messages on Facebook to people I knew would know how certain people were doing. Thankfully, no one I knew was injured.
I will never look at running in the same way again.
What gives me hope in the face of such evil is that my Twitter feed and my Facebook wall were filled with messages of hope and love.

I will choose to claim the good in people and see evil for the aberration it is. I believe there are far more people who are good than bad.
The next few months will be filled with analysis and stronger protections for our citizens. Let’s not forget why the line at the airport is taking longer and stop complaining when the NBA wands everyone who enters the FedEx Forum for a Grizzlies game.
My sweet Yates went back to school today even though she felt terrible when she woke up. Actually, she only agreed to go if I brought her a Lenny’s ham sandwich. That was an easy trade. She felt well enough at lunch to stay for the whole day. I’m proud of her.
Since I had my morning back, I did a little work for my husband’s company, masterIT before heading to Germantown Methodist for my spin class.
Much to my dismay, our instructor, Tiffany was sick and she had a sub for the class. I regret that I cannot remember her name right now, but my legs will never forget her! We spent the entire hour on the bike. Tiffany gets us off the bike about half way through for some weight training but this girl just kept spinning. And spinning and spinning.
We jumped up and down in our seats until I thought I couldn’t go any more. But I did. I’m stronger than I thought and I burned over 500 calories!
The rest of the day was spent getting ready for parties my husband and I are going to this weekend. One is a wedding shower for my husband’s best friend who’s New Orleans wedding this March is my current motivator for getting fit. The other is the Ronald McDonald House Oscar Party at the Columns downtown Sunday night.
This is an event special to the bride in the New Orleans wedding. We went last year and had a blast! I’ll show you the pictures of my husband and I on Sunday. Hint: He’s wearing a tux.
Today was an unusual day. As I told you yesterday, my daughter has had a stomach ache since the weekend. We thought she was doing better last night but this morning, she woke up in pain again.
Our doctor said to go to the emergency room so that’s what we did.
Recently, our insurance changed and made a requirement that we only go to Methodist Hospital. I don’t have any problem with Methodist, after all, I was born at Methodist Central where my father was a surgeon.
But my whole adult life I have gone to Baptist. Both my girls were born there. I have a good friend who works there and has been very helpful to me in times past.
But, insurance demanded a change so off to Germantown Methodist we went.
It was a lovely experience.
First, our wait was minimal. The triage nurse was so sweet. Then Dr. Dargie, the pediatrician on call was the brother of a friend of ours who’s husband is also our pediatric dentist.
The nurse on duty, Ashley, could not have been more attentive and Andre, who tried in vain to put her line in was calm and reassuring.
The whole experience was a blessing. Yates is fine. They didn’t find any acute issues so we will treat her with some meds to relax her colon and hopefully this will pass.
As for exercise, there was no physical exercise today. Mental exercise? Yes.
