Beginning Weigh-In

Every weight loss journey has a beginning and mine begins at 171.8 pounds. Yikes. How did I get here? As a teenager, I never could gain weight. I would eat anything and everything I wanted and never gain a pound. My friends hated it and would tell me that it would catch up to me one day. Boy were they right!

With a starting weight sStarting Weight et, I have a goal in mind. 30 pounds gone. I believe 141 is a realistic weight for me and I can achieve it.

Exercise and meal planning are going to be my methods. I will also be tracking both using I love this app because it has so many restaurant foods already in it and it is really easy to import recipes from online sources. I use it on my phone and on the web so there is no excuse not to log my food.

If you are new to this, I recommend just logging your food for a few weeks and see how much you are eating. You may be surprised at how many calories you are eating! I sure was.

One week later… and I’m off to a good start.

Food Prep and Meal Planning

Meal planning is not best done by walking around Kroger and seeing what’s good. Yet, that’s what I find myself doing more often than not.

Even worse is giving up and picking up a pizza or worse, fried chicken. And my family loves some fried chicken!

I have not been able to lose any weight for the past year. I have been working out 5 to 6 days a week since May when Orangetheory Fitness opened in Germantown. I have lost inches, and believe me, I’m happy about that but there are 30 pounds hanging around that need to go. So…

Meal planning and food preparation have become my new best friend. No longer will I stand in front of the fridge and wonder what I can eat. I have prepped snacks for the week as well as green smoothies or refrigerator oatmeal for breakfast.

Tomorrow, I will post my weekly weigh-in which will serve as my starting point (eek). I have to be honest, I’m not thrilled with where my weight stands and even less thrilled to be sharing it with you but I am counting on the accountability of this blog to inspire me to lose.

Starting again

So, my last post was in response to the Boston Marathon bombing. Wow. I really am not much of a runner but I did relate to what happened that day.

In the time since then, I managed to injure my knees while riding a SeaDoo (long story), go through 3 months of physical therapy for that and start working with a trainer. I feel stronger than ever but weigh more than I ever have.

What to do?

Some swear by low fat diets. But then I heard there are new studies that say fat doesn’t make you fat. It’s sugar.

So I should choose sweeteners like Splenda? Oh no, not that. It causes headaches and will actually stimulate your appetite and weight gain! Okay then.

How about a Paleo diet? Well, US News ranked it last in all the diets based on being effective at weight loss, safe, reasonably easy to follow, nutritious, and protective against diabetes and heart disease. So, no.

Low carb diets have just as bad a reputation as Paleo. I’ve done Weight Watchers, don’t want to try Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem because I fear the processed foods.

What to do?

Honestly? I have no idea. But I am working out consistently and limiting my calorie intake to a normal level while eating fresh vegetables and fruits along with lean meats.

Wish me luck.

I Am A Runner

by Alys Drake

I am a really bad runner, but a runner, nonetheless. I can barely finish a 5K in under 40 minutes so the idea of running a marathon is a fantasy for me.

When I first heard about today’s bombing at the Boston Marathon, I was shocked, then frightened for people I knew from Memphis who were running. I quickly checked my Twitter feed for information and sent private messages on Facebook to people I knew would know how certain people were doing. Thankfully, no one I knew was injured.

I will never look at running in the same way again.

What gives me hope in the face of such evil is that my Twitter feed and my Facebook wall were filled with messages of hope and love.

My denomination was quick to post this:

UMC Boston

And this Facebook update encouraging a positive statement we can all take:

So many people posted these wise words from Mr. Rogers:

Locally, our Action News 5 anchor, Joe Birch posted this:

And the Memphis Twitter community quickly embraced the hashtag #memrun to track Memphians at the Marathon:

I will choose to claim the good in people and see evil for the aberration it is. I believe there are far more people who are good than bad.

The next few months will be filled with analysis and stronger protections for our citizens. Let’s not forget why the line at the airport is taking longer and stop complaining when the NBA wands everyone who enters the FedEx Forum for a Grizzlies game.

And go for a run this weekend.

Overdue Wrap Up

So sorry. I haven’t posted for absolutely no good reason. But, I have been exercising daily and more importantly, I took my measurements on February 28. Drumroll, please… I lost 8.5 pounds and 9.5 inches! Whoo Hoo! I’m very pleased with my progress and am ready to keep going. Thursday, my husband and I are going to New Orleans for the wedding of my husband’s best friend.

We have been looking forward to this trip all winter and it has been my incentive for my weight loss. My husband and I plan to work out on Thursday before we leave. I’m bringing workout clothes with me. We’ll see if I actually do anything… I’ve been checking out the area where we are staying and it’s less than half a mile to Jackson Square so I’m thinking that a run over there and back may be on my list of things to do Saturday morning. We’ll see! I am really thrilled with what I have accomplished and love the new lifestyle we have. I retook my measurements on March 9 and wow! I haven’t lost any more weight but I’ve lost more inches! 12.5″ to be exact.

Finding a way to work out every day is a fun challenge and I enjoy finding new ways to cook yummy meals. For example, tonight we had a great meal! Braised Chicken and Kale from Cooking Light. I added some brown rice on the side and it was a wonderful meal. Mostly, I am happy. Really happy to be fit and focused on myself.

That may sound strange but everyone needs a little focus on self. That doesn’t mean you don’t care about others or have responsibilities but it does mean that it’s okay to put yourself first. I have also learned that I can do more than I thought I could. I never believed that I could exercise daily but here I am, doing it! And guess what? You can too! All you need is a mental shift and you are off to the races! Try different classes. Group classes, dance, yoga, Pilates, Zumba, spin, running, biking, walking, cross fit, P90X, whatever floats your boat, just go do it! And do it for you. I will post occasionally from now on. Sometimes with what I’m doing exercise-wise, sometimes with new recipes, or just with any other thoughts. Thanks for being here with me.

Here’s to the next 10 pounds or inches gone!!

Back to (Somewhat) Normal

My sweet Yates went back to school today even though she felt terrible when she woke up. Actually, she only agreed to go if I brought her a Lenny’s ham sandwich. That was an easy trade. She felt well enough at lunch to stay for the whole day. I’m proud of her.

Since I had my morning back, I did a little work for my husband’s company, masterIT before heading to Germantown Methodist for my spin class.

Much to my dismay, our instructor, Tiffany was sick and she had a sub for the class. I regret that I cannot remember her name right now, but my legs will never forget her! We spent the entire hour on the bike. Tiffany gets us off the bike about half way through for some weight training but this girl just kept spinning. And spinning and spinning.

We jumped up and down in our seats until I thought I couldn’t go any more. But I did. I’m stronger than I thought and I burned over 500 calories!

The rest of the day was spent getting ready for parties my husband and I are going to this weekend. One is a wedding shower for my husband’s best friend who’s New Orleans wedding this March is my current motivator for getting fit. The other is the Ronald McDonald House Oscar Party at the Columns downtown Sunday night.

This is an event special to the bride in the New Orleans wedding. We went last year and had a blast! I’ll show you the pictures of my husband and I on Sunday. Hint: He’s wearing a tux.
